When Carrol Shelby reworked a 1965 Ford Mustang within an inch of its ponycar life, the resutl was a howling hard riding 2 seats fastback that beat the pants off a passel of an authentic sport cars.

Ford Company shipped over the white fastback Mustangs fitted with the "Hi Performance" V8, 4 speed gearbox, front discs and a Ford Galaxie drum brakes.

Shelby American stiffened the structure, supplemented the suspension, reworked the sterring and fitted the 15x6 inch wheels with a Goodyear Blue Dot highspeed tires.

They added a thirty five horsepower with an aluminium manifold and larger carb slapped on side exit dual exhausts and installed a 4.11:1 locking differential. All cars got a scoopeed fiberglass hood and most had an extra cost blue racing stripes.
By omiting the rear seat, the GT 350 could race as a sport car rather than sedans. The "R models" had no interior trim and got a blue printed cobra racing 289, fiberglass nose valance with cooling ducts, thirty four gallon gas tank and a 15x7 magnesium wheels. GT 350

The GT 350 got plexiglas rear quarter windows, bodyside air scoops and eventually came in more colours. They have a backseat, tamer suspension and offered the locking diff as an option along with the automatic transmission.

Shelby built about 1 thousand gold striped GT 350 models for the Hertz rental fleet. Shelby Mustang grew after 66 decade and were eventually absorbed into Ford production leaving the original editions as exceptions of exceptions to the sports car rule.
