How do I know if I am having coil problems?
If you have a complete coil failure, it would be easy to tell as your car won't start. If you have the more common corrosion problem, then it all comes down to a weaker and intermittent spark as the transmission of your electrical current will be disrupted. Symptoms of this problem include hesitation while starting the car, weak throttle response during acceleration, rough idle, misfiring, backfiring, and dim or weak accessories like the headlights and radio.
What does a performance coil do?
A performance coil has one primary purpose with a few added advantages. The primary purpose is to transform the electricity of the battery into a hotter spark than what a stock coil would provide. This is great for those vehicles with MSD or other race distributors, with enlarged fuel injector ports, a custom engine displacement, forged racing pistons, or many other race applications. It provides the spark needed to maximize the performance of the ignition system. Without the proper set up of supporting components for a high performance ignition coil, it can actually be harmful to your system. If not harmful and the system is equipped to handle the spark, the benefits available would be longer lasting coil life, better protection in extreme circumstances, and less corrosion.
