The Ninja 1000 (and the Z1000) is therefore a deliberate departure to take things back toward street-riding friendliness with a liberal infusion of trickle-down technology to keep the fun quotient high, if not arguably higher on the street.
To go with the great ergonomics, Kawasaki gave this one full-coverage plastic designed to draw engine heat away from the rider, a three-position, manual-adjust windscreen, 10mm-thicker seat foam, rubber footpegs, etc. Not only is the new Ninja 1000 a clothed naked bike (because we Americans just like fairings,
apparently), Kawasaki thinks it could also bridge the gap to its Concours 14, for riders who want a lighter, less complex sport tourer. To that end, it also gets a 5-gallon fuel tank and a bunch of available options, including hard saddlebags (still in the works).
Based on Kawasaki's own naked Z1000, the Ninja 1000 uses the same in-line four-cylinder engine and it's a revelation if you're used to the typical highly-strung sportbike.
Redlined at 11,500, the motor has almost no vibration and the almost limitless-feeling power is delivered quickly and predictably, especially when coming from off-throttle back to on-throttle at the apex of a corner.
Making that transition seamless keeps lurching to a minimum and makes the bike easy to ride smoothly; that's a boom in traffic and will be appreciated by your passenger too.
Handling from the fully adjustable Showa suspension is impeccable, and there's plenty of ground clearance to explore it too.
The $10,999 Ninja 1000 is scheduled to be available some time in December.
In a word, the bike works. For a lot of riders who arent interested in trackdays or racing, it makes more sense than a racer with lights.
As it is, it virtually is a racer anyway. Its just slightly less focused than a ZX-10R with its extra 66 pounds of weight, but with improved bottom-end power and friendlier ergos.
Everything weve said we like about the Z1000 applies to this bike, and it comes with more wind protection, fuel capacity and versatility for $400 more. Whats not to like?
